For home owners, the best way to keep your backyard clean, safe, and attractive is to periodically trim your lawn. And how will you do this and solve the common lawn mower problems Using the right tool for the job is the safest bet.

However, it is not every other day that your lawn mower will perform efficiently. Sometimes and often after consistent jobs, your lawn mower could develop a number of problems that unless fixed could affect how the lawn mower operates. These problems include:-

 1.Lawn mower clutch problems .

  2. Lawn mower coil problems .

  3.  Lawn mower starter problems .

  4.  Lawn mower vibrations problems .

In this post, we look at what you can do to fix some of these lawn mower problems before they become a bother every other day.

 1.Lawn mower clutch problems :

Lawn mower clutch problems

Lawn mower clutch

The lawn mower clutch helps to transfer the power produced from the mower’s engine system to the drive train. The clutch is typically connected to the two drive shafts found in the mower’s engine system.

It is easily controlled by a toggle switch. For a PTO clutch, the system is usually connected to the shaft of the blade so that when it spins, the blade spins too with the aid of a belt that attaches the main shaft to the pulley of the PTO clutch.

Fixing the Clutch

If the clutch isn’t performing efficiently, the best thing to do is to adjust it. To adjust it here is what you do.

  • Set the mower on a flat ground.
  • Apply the emergency brakes.
  • Open engine and remove spark plugs.
  • Locate clutch – use the mowers manual.
  • Locate the adjustment slots (thin long rectangular shaped openings in brake plate).
  • Insert feeler gauge in the slots – to check the distance between rotor faces and armature.
  • Insert the feeler in slot one and tighten the nut. (use a screw driver).

NOTE : Make your adjustments equal until there is no gap between the rotor faces and the armature then reconnect your spark plugs. The clutch is shaped like bell housing and should be at the underside of the mower’s engine. Additionally you can identify the clutch by following the mower’s blades that are basically routed through the clutch.

    2.Lawn Mower Coil Problems :

    lawn mower coil problems

    lawn mower coil

The lawn mowers ignition system is composed of a number of parts. One of the major parts that aids in the ignition process is the coil. The magnetic coil also called the armature is usually found inside the clutch.

When you turn on your lawn mower system (whether with a rope, key, or electric starter motor) you rely on the complete ignition system. The system works together to produce a spark inside the mower’s combustion chamber once you turn on the flywheel. The spark switches on the mower.

    Testing the Ignition Coil

The coil system is the easiest thing to check once you embark on trouble shooting the mower’s ignition system.

    • Clip an end of the spark tester on the ignition cable and ground the other on a cylinder head.
    • Spin the flywheel rapidly while keeping an eye for spark through tester window.
    • If spark jumps tester gap the coil works fine. If not it needs replacement.

    Replacing the Mower’s Coil

    • Unhook the mower’s spark plug and secure it.
    • Remove the old magnetic coil.
    • Disconnect stop switch wire from the flywheel brake (remove coil).
    • Attach new coil (use the packed mounting screws).
    • Push the armature from the flywheel and tighten one of the screws.
    • Make sure the flywheel is turned to keep the magnets on the opposite side from a coil.
    • Put the right shim between the flywheel’s rim and ignition coil.
    • Hold the shim and turn flywheel to keep magnets directly adjacent to the coil.
    • Loosen any tight screw to allow magnate to pull the coil against shim and flywheel.
    • Now tighten the mounting screws while rotating flywheel until the shim slips free.
    • And reconnect your lawn mower switch.

    3.Lawn Mower Starter Problems :

    Lawn Mower Starter

If you want to diagnose your mower’s starter problems, it is important to start with the battery. Check out if the battery is producing adequate electricity. A battery that’s properly charged is really important. Once fully charged the battery should read over 12.4 volts in the voltmeter. Anything below makes the battery faulty and therefore the battery should be replaced.
However, if the battery is okay, it might be time to move onto another possibility, electrical connections and wiring. Loose, corroded, or even broken wires can reduce the voltage inside the lawn mower’s components thus interfere with the operation of the mower. You can, therefore, check through this.

Nonetheless, if these two are okay – the starter solenoid could be the problem. Starter Solenoid is the switch that energizes the starter motor of the mower’s engine. It is remotely mounted with four or three threaded electrical lugs. These lugs are basically attached to the ignition switch, starter, battery, or ground wires. Attach a jumper wire from the lug where the mower’s battery cable connects to the lug where engine starter cable also connects. If the starter motor turns over once you connect the jumper wire, replace the solenoid; and if it doesn’t replace the motor.

The starter motor is bolted to the crankcase of the engine. It turns the flywheel teeth using the adjacent teeth on its plunger. This is what turns on the lawn mower’s engine. The starter motor can usually be replaced or rebuilt. Ask an expert technician to help if you intend to rebuild your starter motor.

    4.Lawn Mower Vibrations Problems :

Although the shaking of a lawn mower may seem like a normal occurrence, sometimes your lawn mower blade can vibrate excessively. This is a very dangerous problem that needs immediate fixing.

In fact, excessive vibration can cause uneven trims and possible lawn mower blade-related injuries. Therefore if your lawn mower vibrates excessively you should do the following.

    • Stop the engine immediately.
    • Remove the spark plugs.
    • Inspect the lawn mower blade.
    • Check the blade for damages or uneven weight distribution.
    • Replace the blade – click here to learn how.
    • Test the blade if it is balanced.
    • Fix the blade and start mowing

NOTE: Testing if your blade is balanced is actually no brainier. Simply drive the nail through a wall and hang your blade in it. When you do that the heavier side of the blade will drop lower than the lighter side.

Generally, most of the times when there is an excessive vibration on the mower, it is often a result of uneven blade weight distribution. This can occur at either end of the blade and can be felt when the blade spins – and when it knocks around unevenly.

    Vibrations Problems: Additional Tips

There are other lawn mower problems that can also cause excessive vibration on mowers such as the crankshaft. If the crankshaft is bent, it will make the mower to vibrate vigorously. Bends on the lawn mowers crankshaft are often caused if your mower suddenly strikes something heavy or solid that it’s unable to go past.

Such things will include stamps, logs, and rocks, among other things. This sudden halt can easily damage the crankshaft plus the mower’s blade and in turn, cause heavy vibrations when your mower spins or runs. This can be extremely dangerous and must be addressed immediately. Replacing the blade is usually an easier way to restore normal operations on your mower system.
